By Eric Spitznagel. January 11, pm Updated January 14, pm. Mason, a former college football player from suburban Milwaukee, was almost 20 years old when he lost his virginity. For Mason, the simple act of kissing was something he largely avoided in high school, afraid that without enough experience he would do it wrong. When he went to college he met a girl, Jeannie, who invited him back to her dorm room to fool around. Over the span of two years, Orenstein spoke to hundreds of boys across the United States, ranging in age from their early teens to mids and spanning all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, religious beliefs and even sexual orientations.

Terry Gross. They spanned a broad range of races, religions, classes and sexual orientations. Author Peggy Orenstein knows that talking to your son about sex isn't easy: "I know for a lot of parents, you would rather poke yourself in the eye with a fork than speak directly to your son about sex — and probably he would rather poke himself in the eye with a fork as well," she says. But we don't have "the luxury" to continue avoiding this conversation, she says. Orenstein spent 25 years chronicling the lives of adolescent and teen girls and never really expected to focus on boys. Orenstein notes that society doesn't often give boys "permission or space" to discuss their interior lives. Maybe that's why the young men she spoke to were so eager to open up: "When they had the chance [to talk], when somebody really gave it to them and wasn't going to be judgmental about what they had to say, they went for it. Orenstein says the boys she spoke with felt constrained by traditional notions of masculinity.
Male body image is an important topic. Just as the average female runway model has gotten thinner, the average male Playgirl model has gotten thinner and more muscular. Boys are feeling the pressure to look like the media images they see, sometimes with dangerous consequences. What is the perfect male body? If you watch TV or read a magazine, it's clear what is considered an ideal body for a man. Throw in a narrow waist and large shoulders, giving the body a V-shaped torso, and you have the idealized male body. Where are our boys getting these ideas? Although there is not nearly enough research on this issue, some researchers are examining the messages our boys are getting.
